Thank you for making the second annual Salaam Shalom Celebration interfaith dinner such a success. More than 500 people from different cultures and faiths enjoyed middle-eastern cuisine prepared by Samir Dabit of Ramla, Israel on January 22, 2006, at The Lodge at Ironwoods 147th Street just east of Mission Road.

BACKGROUND
Salaam is the Arabic word for peace, and Shalom is the Hebrew word for peace. And while the two words loosely translate into “peace, peace,” both words mean much more than a simple English definition. We deliberately chose those words, as well as the word ‘celebration,' to indicate that this is a celebration of peace — not speeches, politics, or fundraising.

Importantly, Salaam Shalom Celebration is not sponsored by or funded by any organizations; it’s the private initiative of people who want to reach out, spend time together and build relationships. This is a collaboration of hundreds of people, and is a testament to the power of each individual.

This event is a gathering of individuals who believe quite simply that the long-lasting road to peace is built by developing relationships and understanding between different cultures.

For many years, Samir, a Christian Arab, along with his son-in-law, Fouad and “brother” David Leichman — a Jew from Kibbutz Gezer — have co-hosted a similar party in Israel blending Jews, Muslims, and Christians. A restaurant owner in Ramla, Samir is known for his extraordinary middle-eastern cuisine. More than a thousand Kansas Citians have enjoyed Samir’s specialties.

This celebration is an excellent opportunity for all of Abraham's children - Muslims, Christians and Jews - to recognize and cherish their shared religious heritage and to promote a harmonious future.
